Everybody knows how important it is to keep a vehicle's emission levels at a minimum. Needless to say, exhaust gases are harmful not only to the environment but to the engine's performance as well. With that being said, your ride is equipped with several components that make sure that these toxic exhaust gases are kept at bay. The engine is essentially a furnace that needs to burn huge quantities of fuel in order to work. It is then the Oxygen Sensor that monitors the amount of oxygen present during the combustion process. Usually located near the exhaust pipe, the Oxygen Sensor can tell whether your ride is running in rich and lean mixtures. It does this by collecting the results of a specific chemical reaction that generates a certain amount of voltage. The sensor then sends the data to your vehicle's computer, which calculates whether the fuel/air mixture are in the right proportions. Basically, a balanced burning ratio must be achieved in order to burn fuel optimally. To further illustrate, if there is too little air left after the combustion, it can be called a "rich" mixture. That means there's too much fuel residue, which creates too much emission. If there's too much air on the other hand, it's called a "lean" mixture. This kind of mixture creates a lot of nitrogen-oxygen pollutants, causing the engine to perform poorly. With a properly functioning sensor, the computer can adjust the air/fuel mixture accordingly to maximize engine performance while minimizing exhaust emission at the same time.
