Sealing your exhaust system is imperative if you don't want it to leak. The Exhaust Gasket is built specifically for that purpose. This type of gasket is mounted in between the engine block and the cylinder head. As its name implies, it's designed to seal the cylinders to ensure maximum compression and prevent coolant leakage. These days, there are four types of exhaust gaskets and they all differ in the kind of materials they use. Multiple-layered steel gaskets consist of three kinds of steel, which are coated with an adhesive so they can stick together. Solid copper gaskets meanwhile are made of copper and have been o-ringed to hold the copper in place. Composite gaskets on the other hand use older technology. That's because they use asbestos or graphite, which is more prone to leaking and explosions. Last but not the least is called the Elastomeric gasket, which use steel core plates to cover oil and coolant passages. Unfortunately, exhaust gaskets will eventually falter and when that happens, they should be replaced immediately. Gasket failure can actually cause compression loss and even emission gases being forced into the cooling system. Both of these things can cause overheating and even engine wear. When a huge amount of coolant goes to the cylinders, hydrolock can happen and that may lead to massive engine damage. With that being said, it's important that you always check your ride's Exhaust Gasket all the time. That way, you don't have to end up being at the losing end when it breaks down.
