When you're on your way down a steep hill or road with your ride carrying quite the load, there's a good chance that the wheel brakes will falter. Fortunately, you can always call on an Exhaust Brake to prevent your auto from going all the way down. Technically speaking, exhaust brakes are built to slow down most diesel-powered vehicles quickly. They also save your ride's wheel brakes from getting busted especially during downhill driving. So how do exhaust brakes work? Basically, they retard power from the diesel engine. That means they release compressed air through the exhaust valve, slowing down the crankshaft's rotation as a result. Meanwhile, most exhaust brakes are installed on the outlet area of the turbocharger, retarding the engine's ability to push or exhaust compression. For this to happen, there is a butterfly valve in most exhaust brakes that stay open all the time until it is fully activated. After that, the butterfly valve closes and restricts the flow of exhaust gases kept inside the cylinder. This in turn forces the piston to expel the compression to the exhaust brake, thereby absorbing the energy stored in it. To simplify everything, it's just like removing the exhaust gases little by little and using that power to slow down the crankshaft. Since the crankshaft is connected to the wheels, it slows down their movement. Compared to wheel brakes, an Exhaust Brake doesn't produce loud and screeching noise. If you use it correctly, you can be certain that your wheel brakes will last longer.
